A major, 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck in the North Pacific Ocean near Japan on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck Japan’s north-eastern region, according to the Japan Meterological Agency.

It comes after Japan issued a megaquake warning amid fears up to 200,000 people could die earlier this week, following on from a 7.5 magnitude earthquake recorded on Monday.
